Welcome to the New School Year/Bienvenidos al nuevo año lectivo

Welcome to the beginning of another school year, one that I hope will be very successful for all of my students. I hope that you are all ready to work hard, learn a lot, and perhaps even have a little fun as well. This has been a busy summer for my family. In June, my wife and my two children all had birthdays. It was certainly a month full of parties. Toward the end of July, we traveled to Ecuador for three weeks to visit our family there. We had a wonderful trip. Check out the video below if you want to see some of what we did one Sunday afternoon while we were there. It's August now, and I have been thinking a lot about what needs to get done to prepare for the new school year. I am sure that all of you had an interesting vacation as well. I would love to read about your summer adventures to get to know you better.

Bienvenidos al comienzo de otro año lectivo, un año que espero que será de mucho éxito para todos mis alumnos. Ojalá que todos estén listos para trabajar duro, aprender mucho y tal vez hasta divertirse un poco también. Este verano ha sido muy ocupado para mi familia. En junio, cumplieron años mi esposa y mis dos hijos. Definitivamente fue un mes de muchas fiestas. A finales de julio viajamos al Ecuador por tres semanas para visitar a nuestra familia. La pasamos muy lindo. Pueden ver el video abajo si quieren ver un poco de lo que hicimos un domingo por la tarde durante nuestra estancia allí. Ahora ya es agosto, y he estado pensando mucho en los preparativos para el nuevo año escolar. Seguramente ustedes pasaron unas vacaciones muy interesantes también. Me encantaría leer de sus aventuras de este verano para conocerles mejor.

Goodbye to Another Year/Una despedida al año lectivo

Well, here we are at the end of another school year. I have truly enjoyed working with all of my students this year and I wish all of you a wonderful summer and much success in fifth grade. I hope this won't be the last time we run into each other. I'm sure I'll see you all from time to time at Wal-Mart and other places. Don't ever get too cool to say, "Hello." I'll always answer back. :-) By the way, even though you're not in my class anymore, you are always welcome to visit this site and continue to post on what you see or just send me a shout out if you want to do that. I'll continue to have quizzes and weekly polls for you to participate in. If you want to recommend a book through Shelfari, you can do that, too. I'd love to hear from you about what the best and worst parts of fourth grade were. Maybe we can make it even better for next year's group. Anyway, this is goodbye for now, but I hope you'll all stay in touch!

Bueno, ya se acaba otro año lectivo. Me ha hecho muy feliz tener la oportunidad de trabajar con todos y cada uno de mis alumnos este año, y les deseo a todos un verano maravilloso y mucho éxito el próximo año en quinto grado. Espero que éste no sea la última vez que nos topamos. Seguramente les veremos de vez en cuando en Wal-Mart y en otros lugares. No se vuelvan demasiado creídos para saludarme. Yo siempre responderé a sus saludos. :-) A propósito, a pesar de que ya no son mis alumnos, siempre pueden visitar este sitio y seguir comentando sobre lo que ven o simplemente saludar si eso quieren hacer. Seguiré poniendo pruebitas y encuestas en el sitio para que respondan. Si quieren recomendar un libro a través de Shelfari, pueden hacer eso también. Me encantaría que me escriban sobre cuál fue lo mejor y peor de cuarto grado. Tal vez lo podemos mejorar para el grupo del próximo año. Entonces, por ahora nos decimos, "Chao," pero ¡espero mucho que se mantengan en contacto!

Pizza Ranch & Botanic Garden

Last Wednesday our 4th graders took a field trip to Fort Worth to visit the Fort Worth Botanic Garden and participate in the Pizza Ranch at Will Rogers Memorial Center. The weather really cooperated. We had sunny skies, but not too much heat for our scavenger hunt through the Botanic Garden. After working up a good hunger, we went over to the Will Rogers Memorial Center to learn about the food pyramid and all of the ingredients that go into a pizza. We got to see how cows are milked, what wheat, tomato, and various herb plants look and smell like, and which parts of the cow different cuts of meat come from. We witnessed an expert pizza thrower throw dough to make pizza crust and then ended our tour by eating Domino's Pizza and Blue Bell ice cream for lunch. All in all, it was a "full" day in more ways than one.

El miércoles pasado nuestros alumnos de 4to grado dieron un paseo a Fort Worth para visitar el jardín botánico y participar en "Pizza Ranch" en el complejo de Will Rogers. Hizo bonito día. Hacía sol, pero no tanto para incomodarnos durante nuestra gincana en el jardín botánico. Después nos empezó a dar hambre, así que fuimos al complejo Will Rogers para aprender sobre la pirámide alimenticia y todos los ingredientes que se necesitan para hacer una pizza. Vimos cómo se ordeñan las vacas y cómo se ven las plantas de trigo, tomate y varias hierbas y especias. Vimos también de qué parte de la vaca vienen diferentes tipos de carne. Miramos a un experto en hacer pizzas tirar la masa al aire para formar la base perfecta de una pizza, y después terminamos el paseo comiendo pizza de Domino's y helado Blue Bell. Al final, fue un día "lleno." :-)

ACCEL Rube Goldberg Machines/Máquinas Rube Goldberg del grupo ACCEL

Our ACCEL students are involved in a multi-week, multi-grade project to build Rube Goldberg machines. Each team has five or six members, and their goal is to put a ball in a cup. They drew plans first, and now they have begun to build the machines. We can't wait to see what the finished products look like, but in the meantime we got some inspiration from the video below. DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME! If you want to try your hand at fixing a Rube Goldberg machine online, PBS Kids has one here.

Nuestros alumnos del programa ACCEL están trabajando en grupos para crear máquinas Rube Goldberg. Cada grupo tiene cinco o seis miembros de varias edades, y su meta es poner una pelota en un vaso. Hicieron sus planes primero, y ahora han empezado a fabricar sus máquinas. Estamos ansiosos por ver los productos finales, pero por ahora recibimos inspiración y buenas ideas del video de abajo. ¡OJO! ¡NO INTENTEN ESTO EN CASA! The Big Snow/La gran nevada

Well, I hope all of you are enjoying your day off from school and have had a chance to get out in the snow and play a little. As soon as I got home yesterday, we built a snowman in our front yard. Let me know about the fun things that you have done over these past two days of winter weather.

MISD Turns 100!/¡MISD cumple 100 años!

Did you know that this year Mansfield Independent School District (MISD) turns 100? On February 4, we're going to celebrate the big occasion with a giant timeline that takes a look at how things have changed over the last century and how they might look in the future. We're going to research areas such as fashion, food, books, technology, and history to include in our timeline. Below are some links to give you some more information.

Thanksgiving/Día de Acción de Gracias

As Thanksgiving approaches next week, I just want to let all of my students, past and present, know how thankful I am for each of you. There are so many things I have to be thankful for: my job, my wife and children, my family, our country, and much more. I hope that each of you enjoys the week off. If you have a minute, I'd like to know what you are thankful for this year.

Ya que el Día de Acción de Gracias se aproxima, aprovecho de esta oportunidad para decirles a todos mis alumnos, tanto los de años pasados como los actuales, que doy gracias por cada uno de ustedes. Tengo tanto de qué dar gracias: mi trabajo, mi esposa y mis hijos, mi familia, nuestro país y mucho más. Espero que todos disfruten de la semana libre.
